Business Information Developer Sr.  (Healthcare Data Programmer)
Work location: Walnut Creek, CA
 
This healthcare data role is responsible for creating and executing queries and reports for Anthem's California Commercial business. Position will work closely with the local business and medical management teams to develop data-based reports and analysis on cost and population utilization metrics. The focus of this position is on programming.
 
Primary duties include:
- Design, write, and execute queries to extract healthcare claims and encounter data from data warehouses.
- Construct clinical utilization reports, such as inpatient metrics and care referral patterns, automating updates for recurring views.
- Conduct cross-validation, data cleansing, and quality checks for extracted data.
- Establish and maintain knowledge of data definitions and data integrity issues specific to California.
- Present summarized data interpretations and caveats to business and technical end-users.
- Design and develop dashboards and data visualization views.
- Collaborate with Medical Director and care management clinical staff to identify patterns of care through data analysis.
- Provide programming support for ad hoc projects.
Requires a BS/BA degree; 2-3 years related analytical experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.
 
- PC, spreadsheet, and database skills, as well as experience in standard Business Information tools and programming/query languages is also required.
- Programming ability to develop and modify SQL based queries, and experience with large datasets and relational databases is required.
- Knowledge of healthcare terminology and quality measures is required.
- Expert level proficiency with MS Excel.
- Experience building views in data visualization tools.
- Ability to communicate effectively with multiple levels in the organization and summarize technical terms to business support areas.
- Ability to reach out proactively and independently to obtain support for technical questions.
- Strong interpersonal skills including ability to work directly and collaboratively with clinical staff.
- SAS and/or web-based programming experience are a plus.
- Previous medical informatics work experience preferred.
