The Cost Of Goods Sold Leader reports directly to the PBM President has responsibility to maximize margins and minimize costs to the organization through management of the PBM supply chain. Works closely with the leadership team (particularly the Sales and Account Management Leader and Strategic Business Development Leader) to optimize retail networks and pricing strategies, and the Medical & Clinical Leader in pursuit of value-based care strategies.
Key Accountabilities and Priorities:
  • Improves the value of plan sponsors' drug benefits by managing contracts around the cost and utilization of prescription drugs
  • Manages the retail network and contracting strategies
  • Manages relationships and partnerships with Pharmacies as well as with mail service pharmacies to ensure costs remain low while maintaining a high level of service to employees/members
  • Develops contracting strategies to maximize benefit through the most cost-effective means
  • Negotiates discounts and rebates with drug manufacturers; uses PBMs pool purchasing power to negotiate discounts from pharmaceutical manufacturers to lower benefit costs for clients and consumers
  • Provides guidance for drug benefit to encourage the use of lower cost drug alternatives (i.e. generics) when appropriate; advises Anthem regarding set-up of plan design (i.e. copay tiers) as applicable

Skills and Characteristics:
  • Thorough understanding of pharmacy networks, mail service pharmacy processes, benefits plan design, drug plan design to enable the jobholder to understand where savings are attainable
  • Understanding of vendor contracts and pricing strategies to most effectively identify potential areas for savings, better alternatives to existing contracts, or areas where the level of service could and should be improved to best serve customers/clients
  • Executive presence and negotiation skills to allow the leader to represent the PBM to stakeholders/partners, form effective relationships with pharmacies/mail order pharmacies, and effectively position Anthem’s PBM business amongst competitors

Job Requirements

  • A degree such as a BBA with a focus on Sales, Marketing, Advertising, Finance, or related is required for this position; Master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years P/L experience running a major operation or sales program and at least five years of substantial leadership and management experience
  • At least five years of experience in the Health Plan / PBM industry is essential to understand the nature of COGS within the industry and the tie to associated strategy
  • Demonstrated superior oral, written, and interpersonal communication, persuasion, and negotiation skills
  • Strategic thinking and demonstrated organizational leadership capabilities required
  • Key skills include analytical ability, innovation and creativity, teamwork and communications
  • Ability to successfully interface at all levels with the customer, industry, and corporate interfaces
  • Strong leadership, change management, coaching, and staff development skills
